Ammonia scare near Fishing Port
The Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA) has confirmed that there were traces of ammonia in three sewerage substations leading up to the Fishing Port.
SFRSA spokesperson, Jones Madeleine, stated that the suspected case of ammonia leakage was reported at around 8.18pm on Friday night.
The agency immediately mobilised its team on site to identify the source of the suspected ammonia discharge.
The rescue officers discovered that the smell of ammonia was emanating for the connected sewerage systems near the Amusement Centre, the Indian Ocean Tuna (IOT) factory and Oceana Fisheries.
Mr Madeleine emphasised that the traces of ammonia present in these three areas were not life-threatening.
Having detected the highest level of ammonia near the Oceana Fisheries, SFRSA received help the next day, Saturday, from the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) and the Division of Risk and Disaster Management (DRDM) to pump out the sewage.
“We will be contacting and meeting up with the relevant authorities that are operating at the port on Tuesday (today) to find a solution for these ammonia incidents,” Mr Madeleine provided.
