The Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency tended to a minor incident at the Maharajas Restaurant, Eden Island yesterday evening, and were able to contain the situation and stop it escalating into a fire.

The call requesting fire services was received by the authority at exactly 4.51pm, after a heat extractor was thought to be on fire by employees of the Indian restaurant.

According to public relations officer of the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency (SFRSA) Jones Madeleine, by the time they arrived on scene a few minutes after the call, everyone had already been evacuated from the building.

Mr Madeleine clarified that the fire was not considered dangerous as such as it was a smouldering fire (no flames but rather just smoke).

“Upon arriving on scene, everyone had already been evacuated. They use a stone oven at the restaurant and this was on as usual and caused some sort of malfunction with one of the fans in the heat extractor located above the oven. So while it was not an actual fire, it caused the stubborn stuck-on grease and oil on the extractor to melt resulting in lots of smoke,” Mr Madeleine said.

Nothing was affected or destroyed during the incident except for the stone oven itself, which cracked after being cooled down so rapidly.
