Fire fighters celebrate their day
May 4 has been recognised in many European countries for centuries as Fire Fighters’ Day because of Saint Florian.
According to legend, Saint Florian was able to save an entire burning village in ancient Rome with just a single bucket of water. Saint Florian (Patron Saint of fire fighters) is now known as the defender of those who come in danger of fire.
The day gained recognition during tragic loss of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, it was a way to honour their lives and the sacrifice that firefighters are willing to make on a daily basis. Today the International Fire fighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4 all over the world.
It is a day to celebrate and appreciate the hard work of the fire fighters as well as to honour and recognise the bravery, courage, determination and sacrifices that fire fighters make to ensure the safety of communities and the environment. It is also a day to thank the current and past fire fighters for their invaluable contributions and to remember those who have died while serving the community or dedicated their lives to safeguarding the people.
IFFD ribbons are blue and red ribbons pinned together. The linked colours are symbolic of the main elements’ firefighters work with; red for fire and blue for water. These colours are also internationally recognised as representing emergency service.
The two fire services in Seychelles take turn to host the event. This year the event is being hosted by the Airport Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS).
At noon today, the fire sirens will sound for 30 seconds followed by a minute’s silence in memory of, and respect for all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty or passed on. This is known as the ‘Sound Off’. This will be done at all the stations as well as ribbon distribution to the staff.
In line with Covid-19 health restrictions some activities are being done separately.
The SFRSA while participating in the programmed activities will also be hosting a sports day and cleaning activities on all its fire stations starting today until May 6 to allow all firefighters a chance to participate, but also to keep the numbers of participants at a minimum. This will culminate in lunch and light entertainment until 4pm.
